This multi-disciplinary comprehensive program was developed by the Professional Association of Wilderness Guides and Instructors (PAWGI), and it is geared towards individuals wishing to be introduced to a career as Wilderness Guides in the growing adventure tourism field.

Certified Assistant Guides (CAG) may assist a Certified Wilderness Guide (CWG) for day and multi-day land expeditions in any area suitable for their skill and experience level, excluding activities involving travel on glaciers or permanent snow, climbing, or the use of hands and body for balance. They may also conduct single day land expeditions in any area suitable for their level of experience, under the direct supervision of a Certified Wilderness Guide (CWG), a Certified Specialized Guide (CSG), a Certified Wilderness Instructor (CWI), or a Certified Wilderness Instructor Trainer (CWIT).

ELIGIBILITY
 
CERTIFICATION
• 18 year or older
• Standard First Aid/CPR Level C Certification¹

¹ Required at the time of certification, upon successful completion of course and exam.

» PAWGI General Standards
  Certification is achieved by following an online course and receiving a mark of 80% or above on the Wilderness Guide General Examination (online exam).

ONLINE COURSE DESCRIPTION
The program is entirely delivered through an online course composed of 8 modules. Each module may be taken separately and independently, at the candidates' own pace.

Module 1: Regulations
Module 2: Nature Interpretation
Module 3: Cultural Interpretation
Module 4: Meteorology
Module 5: Risk & Emergency Management
Module 6: Expeditionary & Outdoor Leadership
Module 7: Sustainability & Conservation
Module 8: Wilderness Survival

Each module includes a set of materials to be reviewed, assignments graded by an instructor, as well as online quizzes. Upon completion of all modules, the candidate takes a final online exam required for certification.

COURSE DATES & LOCATIONS
All required materials are provided in an electronic format. As a result, the purchase of actual text books is not required.   Courses start every week, subject to instructor availability, and are open ended. The course is typically completed in 12 weeks. Course and final exam may also be taken anywhere in the world as long as internet is available.
